Beware of Fake Antivirus Software - A recent report from Google shows that fake antivirus software accounts
for about 15% of all malware. Google indicates that over the past 13 months, there were more than 11,000
domains that were responsible for distributing fake antivirus software. Frequently from spam web
sites and online ads. Fake A/V was also responsible for 50% of all malware delivered over online ads.
Google analyzed more than 240 million web pages for the report.

I find it fascinating that programs (search engine optimization and marketing) would look at
keyword generation to try to determine how people use the net.
While it is true, it isn't a complete picture.
Why?
Mainly because key words must evolve over time.
Take the most common virus of them all
"win fixer"
This virus has been around for 9 years (a minimum value).
It evolves each and every day with a new name and new flavor (flavour).
It manifests itself in different symptoms
- deleting the userinit.exe file (or making the user reboot)
- reboot loops (killing system critical files)
- changing priviledges so that programs can not be run
- deleting system files
- deleting program files
- attaching viruses to the end of programs
- inserting viruses into the middle of a program (usually videos)
- starting downloads (triggering downloads)
- infecting email
- infecting documents (called macros within a microsoft type file)
- infecting programs, files, pictures, videos
- can be invoked by a virus scan, a defrag (anything that hits the file or opens up a file)
- non-microsoft programs can be infected
- facebook, twitter, messenger (windows live, hotmail, yahoo)
- can be invoked when the person downloads or opens messages
- imploring tricks of trust
"this message sent from a friend" (always wait a few days and let the friend call you)
- urgency
"you must open this now" "send money"
"you are infected with a virus" (may even mimic microsoft's popup dialog box)
- click thru (a web page masked over a real web page that you invoke when you click
on what you think is a legitimate button such as "download this pdf file"
